Ilmir bin Rufail Kuliev is a contemporary scholar and researcher known for his academic studies on Islamic literature and Russian Orientalism .
Research and Contributions
Kuliev authored the research study al-Ihtimam bil-Sira al-Nabawiyya bil-Lugha al-Rusiyya (The Study of the Prophetic Biography in the Russian Language), which examines the development and methodologies of Russian and Soviet Orientalist scholarship concerning the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . In this work, he critiqued the assumptions of the Russian Orientalist school, observing that its long-standing traditions played a significant role in shaping how Russian-language readers perceive Islam and Islamic history .
He also documented the historical constraints under which Russian scholarship operated, pointing out that censorship in Tsarist Russia restricted the publication of Islamic works and Prophetic biographies that conflicted with imperial state policies . Among the early writings he surveyed is the book on the life and religious teaching of the Prophet by the Christian thinker Vladimir Solovyov (1853–1900 CE), noting that Solovyov based his study primarily on Russian and European translations of the meanings of the Quran .
