Ibrahim Muhammad al-Jarmi is a contemporary scholar of Quranic studies known for his reference work Mu'jam 'Ulum al-Qur'an (Dictionary of Quranic Sciences).

Scholarly Work and Methodology

Al-Jarmi compiled Mu'jam 'Ulum al-Qur'an, which was published in Damascus in 1422 AH (2001 CE). He undertook the project after observing that while specialized dictionaries existed for disciplines such as Arabic linguistics, grammar, rhetoric, legal terminology, jurisprudence, and sects, no dedicated dictionary had been produced for the Quranic sciences despite the abundance of technical terms and classical sources in the field.

In defining the scope of Quranic sciences, al-Jarmi incorporated terminology across Quranic exegesis (tafsir), recitation rules (tajwid), variant readings (qira'at), and general disciplines of the Quran, drawing upon classical foundations such as Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi's al-Burhan fi 'Ulum al-Qur'an and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's al-Itqan fi 'Ulum al-Qur'an. He organized the dictionary alphabetically, interweaving terminology from different Quranic disciplines throughout the text, and provided condensed, focused explanations distilled from classical literature without citing explicit references. In arranging Quranic chapters (surahs), he omitted the word surah from entry headings and referenced Quranic verses selectively.
