Abu Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim ibn Saad Aba Husayn is a contemporary Islamic author and researcher known for his encyclopedic reference work Mu‘jam al-Tawhid (A Dictionary of Monotheism).

Scholarly Work and Method

Aba Husayn compiled Mu‘jam al-Tawhid: Dirasah Shar‘iyyah li-Mufradat Alfaz wa-Masa’il al-Tawhid Murattabah ‘ala al-Huruf al-Hija’iyyah (A Legal Study of the Vocabulary and Issues of Tawhid Arranged Alphabetically) to organize theological principles and concepts into an accessible reference work. The work systematically addresses the monotheism of worship (tawhid al-‘ibadah), doctrines of faith (iman), the nullifiers of Islam, and classifications of disbelief (kufr), polytheism (shirk), and hypocrisy (nifaq), providing explicit classifications and clarifying ambiguous terminology.

In structuring the book, Aba Husayn took Kitab al-Tawhid by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab as the nucleus of the project, assigning a dedicated entry to every substantive topic raised in it and incorporating additional related doctrinal headings. His methodology opens each entry with a linguistic definition drawn from classical Arabic dictionaries—including Tahdhib al-Lughah by al-Azhari, al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith wa-al-Athar by Ibn al-Athir, Mukhtar al-Sihah, Lisan al-‘Arab, and al-Mu‘jam al-Wasit—while bypassing linguistic definitions for concepts whose meanings are self-evident. The work was published by Dar al-Qabas.
