Ibn Shams al-Khilafa (543–622 AH / 1148–1225 CE) was an Egyptian emir, poet, and man of letters, renowned for his literary prose and his ethical anthology al-Adab al-Nafia bil-Alfaz al-Mukhtara al-Jamia .

Lineage and Early Life

His full name was Abu al-Fadl Jafar ibn Shams al-Khilafa Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Mukhtar al-Afdali al-Misri al-Qusi, bearing the honorific title Majd al-Mulk . The nisba al-Afdali connects his family to the Fatimid vizier al-Afdal Shahanshah . Another lineage given by Ibn al-Shi'ar records his name as Jafar ibn Ibrahim ibn Ali . His father, Muhammad ibn al-Mukhtar Shams al-Khilafa (520–569 AH), was born in Damietta and had been an associate of the vizier Tala'i ibn Ruzzik .

Ibn Shams al-Khilafa was born in Muharram 543 AH (1148 CE), though another report places his birth in 547 AH . He was trained in al-khatt al-mansub (proportional calligraphy), interacted extensively with leading literary figures, and acquired a reputation for acute intellect and exceptional epistolary style .

Career and Literary Activity

Ibn Shams al-Khilafa held the rank of a senior commander (al-amir al-kabir) . He entered the service of Sultan Salah al-Din as an emir, later serving his son al-Aziz Uthman in Egypt . He subsequently moved to Aleppo, where he served its ruler al-Zahir Ghazi, before eventually returning to Egypt .

As a poet, he composed panegyrics for prominent state dignitaries, while also penning biting satires against Sultan al-Adil I and the vizier al-Qadi al-Fadil . Despite this friction, he composed his ethical and literary compendium al-Adab al-Nafia bil-Alfaz al-Mukhtara al-Jamia in honor of al-Qadi al-Fadil . Ibn Shams al-Khilafa transmitted his collected poetry (Diwan), and among those who narrated from him were the traditionist al-Zaki al-Mundhiri, Shihab al-Din al-Qusi, and his own son, Shams al-Din Dawud (d. 671 AH) .

Death

Ibn Shams al-Khilafa died on 12 Muharram 622 AH (January 1225 CE) at al-Kawm al-Ahmar in Egypt . Ibn al-Shi'ar stated that he died in 610 AH, a claim rejected by biographers in light of al-Mundhiri's contemporary documentation .
