Ibn Sa'd al-Khayr (c. 510–571 AH / c. 1116–1175 CE) was an Andalusian grammarian, philologist, and man of letters from Valencia, best known for his philological commentary al-Qirt ala al-Kamil.
Life and education
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Sa'd al-Khayr al-Ansari al-Balansi was born in Valencia around 510 AH (c. 1116 CE), with ancestral roots in Castalla (Qashtayla). He pursued the linguistic and literary sciences under prominent Andalusian scholars, becoming a close disciple of Ibn al-Sid al-Batalyawsi, and studying with Abu al-Hasan Ibn Ni'ma and Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Isa al-Qulanni.
Ibn Sa'd al-Khayr devoted his career to teaching Arabic grammar, lexicology, and literature throughout his life, earning acclaim for his effective instructional method and fine calligraphic hand. Among those who studied under him were Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Mufarrij and the poet Safwan ibn Idris al-Tujibi.
Scholarly contribution and reception
Ibn Sa'd al-Khayr was recognized as an authority in the linguistic sciences, as well as an accomplished epistolographer and poet. In his philological scholarship, he compiled al-Qirt ala al-Kamil, which synthesized the marginal notes of Abu al-Walid al-Waqqashi and Ibn al-Sid al-Batalyawsi on al-Mubarrad's al-Kamil alongside his own additions. He also authored al-Hulal fi sharh al-Jumal, completing the unfinished commentary of his teacher Ibn al-Sid on al-Zajjaji's grammatical manual from the chapter on lamentation (bab al-nudba) onward.
Biographers such as Ibn al-Abbar noted that despite his mastery of grammar and belles-lettres, he was not invested in hadith transmission and had a well-known absent-mindedness (ghaflah) that was widely attributed to him.
Death
Ibn Sa'd al-Khayr died in Seville in early Rabi' al-Akhar 571 AH (October 1175 CE), having traveled there on a diplomatic mission; another report places his death in 570 AH.
