Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Duwaiyan (1275–1353 AH / 1858–1935 CE) was a Najdi Hanbali jurist, genealogist, and historian, best known for his legal commentary Manar al-Sabil .
Lineage and early life
His full name was Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Salim ibn Duwaiyan . He belonged to the Al Zuhayr clan, who trace their lineage to the tribe of Bani Sakhr, though Khayr al-Din al-Zirikli alternatively attributed him to Bani Zayd . He was born in 1275 AH (1858 CE) in the town of al-Rass in the al-Qasim region of Najd, where he grew up and commenced his early education under local scholars, chief among them the town's judge, Salih ibn Qirnas .
To advance his studies, he traveled to other towns in al-Qasim, learning from Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad ibn Mani' in Unayzah and Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Salim (also recorded as Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Salim) in Buraydah .
Scholarly career
Following his return to al-Rass, Ibn Duwaiyan became the town's primary legal authority, issuing fatwas, resolving disputes, and teaching students in its mosque . Sources record that he was appointed as judge of al-Rass, though another account notes that he was ascetic and refrained from government posts . A number of students graduated under his tutelage who later assumed judicial, preaching, and teaching offices, including Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Rashid and Abd al-Aziz al-Nasir al-Rashid .
Ibn Duwaiyan was noted for his rapid penmanship and fine calligraphy, reportedly copying entire gatherings of quires at a single sitting and amassing an extensive personal library transcribed largely in his own hand .
Scholarly contribution and standing
Biographers characterized Ibn Duwaiyan as a versatile scholar of law, genealogy, and history, known for his humility, mild temperament, and devotion . In jurisprudence, his most celebrated contribution is Manar al-Sabil fi Sharh al-Dalil, a commentary on Mar'i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi's primer Dalil al-Talib . In this commentary, he provided concise textual evidence and legal rationales for each issue, frequently drawing upon early Hanbali reference works such as Ibn Qudamah's al-Kafi while incorporating secondary narrations when supported by stronger proof . The extensive hadith citations in Manar al-Sabil later formed the basis for Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani's multi-volume hadith verification work, Irwa' al-Ghalil .
In biographical history, he compiled Kashf al-Niqab 'an Tarajim al-Ashab, dedicated to Hanbali biographical notices from the time of Ahmad ibn Hanbal to his own era .
Later life and death
Ibn Duwaiyan lost his sight in 1350 AH . He died suddenly on the eve of Eid al-Fitr in 1353 AH (January 1935 CE) in al-Rass .

List of Works
Manar al-Sabil fi Sharh al-Dalil is a commentary on Mar'i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi's Hanbali legal primer, Dalil al-Talib li-Nayl al-Matalib. Its primary objective is to provide concise supporting textual evidence and legal reasoning for each issue presented in the base text. Along with the standard positions of the Hanbali school, the work integrates supplementary legal cases, alternative transmissions and determinations supported by stronger proofs, and hadith evidence.
