Ibn Battal (d. 449 AH / 1057 CE) was an Andalusian Maliki jurist and hadith scholar from Córdoba, best known for his extensive commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari .

Life and Education

Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Khalaf ibn 'Abd al-Malik ibn Battal al-Bakri hailed from Córdoba, where his family belonged to the Yamanite lineage of Banu Battal in al-Andalus . He was known by the sobriquet Ibn al-Lajjam (and in some manuscripts Ibn al-Najjam or Ibn al-Lahham) . Political upheaval and civil strife in Córdoba compelled him to relocate to Valencia .

In his studies, Ibn Battal transmitted traditions and studied under leading Andalusian scholars, including Abu 'Umar al-Talamanki, Abu al-Mutarrif al-Qanaza'i, Abu al-Walid Yunus ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Mughith, Abu 'Umar ibn 'Afif, Abu Muhammad ibn Banush, and Ibn al-Faradi . Among those who transmitted from him were the Quran reciter Abu Dawud and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Bishr of Medinaceli (Madinat Salim) .

Judicial Career and Scholarship

Ibn Battal served as a judge at the fortress of Lorca (Hisn Lawraqah) . Biographers commended his character and erudition; Ibn Bashkuwal described him as an accomplished scholar of sound understanding, fine handwriting, and meticulous transcription who devoted himself intensely to hadith . Al-Qadi 'Iyad praised him as an eminent and noble figure .

As a leading Maliki authority, Ibn Battal composed Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, a multi-volume legal commentary on the hadith compilation of al-Bukhari that focused prominently on legal deductions according to the school of Malik ibn Anas and comparative jurisprudence . Later commentators, notably Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani in Fath al-Bari, drew heavily on this work . He also authored al-I'tisam in hadith and a work on asceticism and spiritual devotion .

Death

Ibn Battal died on a Wednesday night in Valencia, and his funeral prayer was performed at the midday prayer on the final day of Safar 449 AH / 1057 CE . An alternative report given by al-Qadi 'Iyad places his death in 474 AH .
