Abu al-Hasan Tahir ibn Babshadh (d. 469 AH / 1077 CE) was an Egyptian grammarian and philologist who served in the Fatimid chancellery and taught Arabic grammar at the Mosque of Amr ibn al-Aas in Cairo .

Lineage and Career

His full lineage is recorded as Tahir ibn Ahmad ibn Babshadh ibn Dawud ibn Sulayman ibn Ibrahim al-Misri al-Jawhari . He also carried the nisba al-Daylami and was associated with Baghdad before settling in Egypt . Ibn Babshadh initially worked as a merchant dealing in jewels and pearls . He traveled to Baghdad on trade, where he studied under local scholars, including Abu Nasr al-Wasiti, and in Egypt he studied grammar under Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Hufi while also transmitting hadith from his father, the preacher Abu al-Fath Ahmad ibn Babshadh .

He was subsequently appointed to the Fatimid correspondence bureau (diwan al-insha’) in Egypt, where he was assigned a stipend of gold to review and refine official correspondence, ensuring texts were free of grammatical errors, linguistic defects, and orthographic slips . He later resigned his post, turned toward ascetic devotion, and dedicated himself to teaching Arabic philology in the central mosque of Egypt for many years .

Scholarly Standing and Teaching

Ibn Babshadh was recognized by biographers as the leading grammarian of his era in Egypt . His circle produced several prominent philologists, most notably Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Fahham and Muhammad ibn Barakat al-Sa‘idi . At the request of Ibn al-Fahham, Ibn Babshadh dictated an extensive commentary on his own concise grammatical treatise, known as al-Muqaddima al-Muhassaba . He also composed a widely used commentary on al-Jumal by Abu al-Qasim al-Zajjaji .

Death

Ibn Babshadh died in the month of Rajab in 469 AH (1077 CE) after suffering a fatal fall from the minaret—or, according to another account, the roof—of the Mosque of Amr ibn al-Aas in Egypt . An alternate report places his death in 454 AH or shortly thereafter .
