Abu Ali Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Muzaffar al-Hatimi (d. 388 AH / 998 CE) was a Baghdadi philologist, literary critic, and poet . He is best known for his critical confrontations with the poet al-Mutanabbi and his treatise al-Risala al-Muwaddiha .

Life and education

Al-Hatimi was born and based in Baghdad, taking his nisba from an ancestor named Hatim . He came from a literary family; his father was a poet who composed panegyrics for the Abbasid caliph al-Qadir bi-llah, and his son, Abu Talib Ahmad, later became a poet and calligrapher . In Baghdad, al-Hatimi studied under the philologist Ibn Durayd and the lexicographer Abu Umar Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Zahid . He regularly dictated literary and historical reports in literary gatherings, and among those who transmitted from him was the judge Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn al-Muhassin al-Tanukhi .

Literary career and dispute with al-Mutanabbi

When al-Mutanabbi returned to Iraq from Egypt, the Buyid vizier al-Muhallabi prompted al-Hatimi—who was under thirty at the time—to publicly challenge the poet, scrutinize his verse, and expose his flaws . Al-Hatimi engaged al-Mutanabbi in a series of heated salon debates concerning poetic plagiarism (al-sariqat), rhetorical propriety, and the precedence of earlier poets such as Abu Tammam and al-Buhturi .

Al-Hatimi organized these critical encounters into al-Risala al-Muwaddiha (also known as Jabhat al-Adab), which he expanded and dedicated to the vizier Abu al-Faraj Muhammad ibn al-Abbas al-Shirazi after al-Mutanabbi's death . In contrast to the sharp polemics of al-Muwaddiha, he also authored al-Risala al-Hatimiyya, an appreciative comparative treatise demonstrating how verses of al-Mutanabbi aligned with philosophical maxims and the wisdom of Aristotle . Beyond his focus on al-Mutanabbi, he composed Hilyat al-Muhadara, a work addressing poetic theory, rhetoric, and literary lore .

Standing and death

Al-Hatimi was regarded as a formidable and articulate debater with deep mastery of Arabic lexicography and literature . His combative nature and sharp tongue drew hostility from several contemporary men of letters, and he was subjected to harsh satires by poets such as Ibn al-Hajjaj . Nevertheless, Abu Mansur al-Tha'alibi praised his literary talent in Yatimat al-Dahr, remarking that he commanded both eloquence in prose and skill in poetry .

Al-Hatimi died in Baghdad in the month of Rabi' al-Thani 388 AH (April–May 998 CE) .
