Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muhandis (c. 295–385 AH / c. 908–995 CE) was an Egyptian hadith scholar and transmitter, designated by biographical sources as the traditionist of Egypt (muhaddith Misr).

Lineage and Background

His full name was Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn al-Faraj, and he was known as Ibn al-Muhandis as well as Ibn al-Banna'. He grew up in Egypt in a family engaged in hadith transmission; his father, Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Banna' al-Muhandis, was also an Egyptian traditionist.

Hadith Studies and Transmission

Ibn al-Muhandis studied extensively with a wide circle of scholars. He narrated directly from his father, as well as from Abu Bishr al-Dulabi, Dawud ibn Ibrahim al-Baghdadi, Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Naffakh, Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Qudayd, Muhammad ibn Zabban al-Hadrami, and Abu Ubayd ibn Harbuyah. He also traveled to Mecca, where he met and heard from Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi. Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi noted that Ibn al-Muhandis was prolific in narration, and pointed out that any attribution of direct hearing from al-Nasa'i was an error.

A significant number of prominent students and hadith masters transmitted from him in Egypt. These included Abd al-Ghani al-Azdi, the Andalusian scholar Ibn al-Faradi, Yahya ibn al-Husayn al-Qaffas, Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Muzaffar al-Kahhal, Abd Allah ibn Miskin, and the vizier Abu Ahmad al-Abbas ibn al-Fadl ibn al-Furat. His transmitted notebooks circulated widely among subsequent generations of scholars, notably his multi-part collection of dictations titled Fawa'id Abi Bakr ibn al-Muhandis ("The Hadith Benefits of Abu Bakr ibn al-Muhandis") and his notebook Hadith Abi al-Qasim Afiya wa Ghayrihi ("Hadith of Abu al-Qasim Afiya and Others").

Standing and Death

Ibn al-Muhandis was widely recognized for his precision and piety, being characterized as trustworthy, good, and God-fearing (thiqa khayyir taqiyy), and leading hadith masters selected narrations directly from his collections. He lived to the age of ninety and died in 385 AH (995 CE).
