Ibn al-Kattani (d. c. 420 AH / 1029–1030 CE) was an Andalusian physician, philosopher, and man of letters from Cordoba, best known for compiling the poetic anthology al-Tashbihat min Ash'ar Ahl al-Andalus ("Similes from the Poetry of the People of al-Andalus").
Background and Education
His full name was Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Madhhiji, commonly known as Ibn al-Kattani. Early biographical accounts sometimes referred to him as Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, though later biographers identified both names as referring to the same individual.
He studied medicine under his uncle, Muhammad ibn al-Husayn. Ibn al-Kattani also studied logic, philosophy, and astronomy under several notable scholars, including Muhammad ibn Abdun al-Jabali, Umar ibn Yunus al-Harrani, Ahmad ibn Hafsun, Maslama ibn Ahmad al-Majriti, Sa'id ibn Fathun al-Saraqusti, and Abu al-Harith the bishop.
Career and Migration
Ibn al-Kattani served as a physician at the Amirid court in Cordoba under the de facto ruler al-Mansur Ibn Abi Amir and subsequently under his son al-Muzaffar. With the eruption of civil strife (fitna) and the disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba, he left the capital and settled in Zaragoza, where he established himself and acquired substantial wealth.
Standing, Students, and Death
Ibn al-Kattani was recognized for his broad knowledge across medicine, logic, literature, and poetry. Ibn Wafid characterized him as sharp-minded, quick-witted, possessing sound understanding and deductive acumen. Ibn al-Abbar described his writings as well known, of superior quality, highly beneficial, and sound. Among his literary compositions was Kitab Muhammad wa-Su'da, noted by al-Dabbi for its charming quality.
His prominent students included the jurist and theologian Ibn Hazm, who studied logic under him and transmitted philosophical and ethical reflections from him, as well as al-Mushafi.
Ibn al-Kattani died around 420 AH (c. 1029–1030 CE) in his seventies, with some reports noting that he was nearing eighty years of age.
