Ibn al-Fahham (422/425–516 AH / 1031/1034–1123 CE) was a Sicilian-born Quranic reader and grammarian who served as the leading authority on Quranic recitation in Alexandria, known for his work on the seven canonical readings, al-Tajrid li-Bughyat al-Murid.

Early life and education

Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr Atiq ibn Khalaf al-Qurashi al-Siqilli was born in Sicily in either 422 AH or 425 AH, a point on which he was reported to have been uncertain. He traveled to Egypt in 438 AH to study Quranic readings under local authorities, continuing his studies there until 454 AH. Among his teachers in recitation were Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Sa'id ibn Nafis, Abu al-Husayn Nasr ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Farisi, Abd al-Baqi ibn Faris, and Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Isma'il al-Maliki. In Arabic grammar, he studied under Tahir ibn Babashadh and dictated a commentary on his grammatical primer, the Muqaddimah.

Teaching career and students

Ibn al-Fahham settled in Alexandria, where leadership of Quranic instruction (ri'asat al-iqra') culminated in him due to his expertise and elevated transmission chains (uluww). Students traveled from various regions to recite before him. His students included Abu al-Abbas ibn al-Hutay'ah, Yahya ibn Sa'dun al-Qurtubi, Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalaf Allah, and Abu Tahir al-Silafi, while Abu Tahir Barakat ibn Ibrahim al-Khushu'i was among the last to transmit from him by general license (ijazah).

Scholarly standing

Ibn al-Fahham was regarded as a reliable authority by Abu Tahir al-Silafi and Ali ibn al-Mufaddal. The Andalusian reader Sulayman ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Homsi remarked that he had seen no one more knowledgeable in Quranic readings and their variant facets in either the East or the West, noting that Ibn al-Fahham memorized reading variants as others memorized the Quran itself. Jamal al-Din al-Qifti characterized him as a truthful, meticulous, and learned master of recitation. His manual on the seven readings, al-Tajrid li-Bughyat al-Murid, was described by Ibn al-Jazari as one of the most intricate works on Quranic readings to resolve, prompting him to write a separate clarification on its differences with al-Shatibiyyah.

Death

Ibn al-Fahham died in the month of Dhu al-Qi'dah 516 AH (1123 CE) in Alexandria, having lived past ninety years of age.
