Life and scholarly career

Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Banna was born in 396 AH / 1005–1006 CE . He studied the variant Quranic recitations under Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Hammami and received hadith from scholars including Hilal al-Haffar, Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran, Abu al-Fath ibn Abi al-Fawaris, Ibn Rizqwayh, and Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Sukkari . He studied Hanbali jurisprudence and dialectics under al-Qadi Abu Ya'la ibn al-Farra .

Ibn al-Banna held prominent teaching circles in Baghdad at the Palace Mosque (Jami' al-Qasr), where he issued legal verdicts and taught hadith, as well as at the Mosque of al-Mansur . His students included his sons Abu Ghalib Ahmad and Yahya, as well as Ismail ibn al-Samarqandi, Abu Mansur Abd al-Rahman al-Qazzaz, Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Farra, and Abu Bakr Qadi al-Maristan . He composed extensively across various disciplines, including a grammatical commentary titled Sharh al-Idah and the legal commentary al-Muqni' fi Sharh Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi .

Standing and criticisms

Ibn al-Banna was recognized by biographical sources as a proficient scholar of Quranic recitation, hadith, and law, characterized by Abu Sa'd al-Sam'ani as a dignified, devout, and articulate figure . Shuja' al-Dhuhli praised his recitation skills, and Hanbali biographical records note his strict stance against innovators .

Conversely, Ibn al-Najjar remarked critically on his analytical depth, and hadith transmitters including Abu al-Fadl ibn Khayrun expressed reservations about his reliability . Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Samarqandi related an accusation that Ibn al-Banna altered manuscript transmission certificates by erasing the nisba of a certain al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Naysaburi to claim the auditions for himself . Ibn al-Jawzi rejected this allegation, arguing that it was transmitted with uncertain phrasing, that Ibn al-Banna possessed abundant authenticated transmissions and had no need for forgery, and that no such Naysaburi contemporary was known in hadith records .

Death

Ibn al-Banna died on 5 Rajab 471 AH / 11 January 1079 CE .
