Husayn ibn Ali al-Harbi is a contemporary Saudi scholar of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and Quranic sciences, best known for his foundational study on the hermeneutical principles of exegetical preference, Qawa'id al-Tarjih 'inda al-Mufassirin: Dirasa Nazariyya Tatbiqiyya (Rules of Preference Among Exegetes: A Theoretical and Applied Study) .
Academic Career and Scholarship
Husayn ibn Ali ibn Husayn al-Harbi pursued his graduate studies at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, where he presented Qawa'id al-Tarjih 'inda al-Mufassirin as his master's thesis . The dissertation was awarded the grade of distinction with honors and a recommendation for publication and academic exchange across universities . In a commendatory preface, the scholar Manna' al-Qattan praised the study for its originality, methodological rigor, and exhaustive documentation, remarking that its depth and scope warranted the status of a doctoral dissertation . The treatise was subsequently published in two volumes in 1417 AH (1996 CE) .
Al-Harbi's scholarship established a formal conceptual framework for the subfield of exegetical preference rules (qawa'id al-tarjih), which had previously remained dispersed throughout classical literature without unified codification . He formulated the standard contemporary definition of the term as "overriding guidelines and principles through which one arrives at identifying the weightiest among divergent views in the interpretation of the Book of God" .
His methodology involved surveying major classical commentaries dedicated to differing views, supplemented by the theoretical contributions of Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn al-Qayyim, alongside primary legal-theory (usul al-fiqh) and linguistic works . He organized these principles into systematic categories: rules pertaining to the Quranic text itself—including variant readings (qira'at), the codex orthography (rasm al-mushaf), and textual context (siyaq)—rules grounded in the Prophetic Sunnah, the transmissions of the early generations (athar), and contextual indicators, and rules derived from Arabic linguistic usage, morphology, and syntax .
