Hasan Muhammad Ayyub (d. 1429 AH / 2008 CE) was an Egyptian Azhari scholar, educator, and author who held pedagogical and preaching posts in Egypt, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
Life and career
Hasan Muhammad Ayyub was born in the Monufia Governorate of Egypt. He pursued his higher religious education at Al-Azhar University, graduating from the Faculty of Usul al-Din (Theology) in 1949 CE.
Ayyub subsequently entered professional service in Egypt, working as a teacher under the Ministry of Education, before serving as an inspector and then director of the technical office at the Ministry of Awqaf. He later relocated to Kuwait, where he served as a preacher, advisor, and author. Moving to Saudi Arabia, he joined the faculty of King Abdulaziz University as a professor of Islamic culture, and subsequently taught at the Institute for the Preparation of Preachers in Mecca. In addition to teaching, his instructional output included an extensive recorded library exceeding a thousand audio and video cassettes covering various fields of Islamic learning.
Reception and controversies
Ayyub's handbook on Islamic theology, Tabsit al-Aqaid al-Islamiyya (Simplification of Islamic Creeds), achieved widespread circulation but prompted criticism from certain contemporary scholars over theological definitions. Critics took issue with his position that whoever believes in their heart is saved with God even if they do not pronounce the two testimonies of faith, as well as his characterization of Ahl al-Sunnah as comprising Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari, Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, and those who follow their path. Among his critics, the scholar Abu Turab al-Zahiri published a rebuttal in the Saudi newspaper al-Madina, arguing that these definitions inclined toward the doctrine of the Murji'ah regarding faith.
Death
Ayyub died on Thursday, 14 Rajab 1429 AH (17 July 2008 CE).
