Fayhan Shali al-Mutayri (also referenced as Fayhan ibn Shali al-Mutayri) is a contemporary Saudi scholar of Islamic jurisprudence and an academic at the Islamic University of Madinah, known for his specialized legal study al-Imdad bi-Ahkam al-Hidad (Providing the Rulings of Mourning).

Academic and Legal Career

Al-Mutayri served as an assistant professor in the College of Sharia at the Islamic University of Madinah. Alongside his academic post, he has contributed legal opinions and advisory rulings on various areas of Islamic jurisprudence, addressing questions on the validity of ritual prayers, the obligations and exemptions of zakat, commercial brokerage compensation, conditional oaths, divorce, and the legal conduct required during the post-marital waiting period (ʿiddah).

In legal scholarship, al-Mutayri gave particular attention to family law and marital obligations. His treatise al-Imdad bi-Ahkam al-Hidad, published in 1405 AH (1984–1985 CE) and serialized in the Journal of the Islamic University of Madinah, examines the legal requirements of mourning (hidad). The work organizes classical legal positions on mourning, classifying its permissible and impermissible categories, delineating the prescribed periods of mourning for deceased husbands and other relatives, and outlining rules regarding adornment, perfume, dwelling, and maintenance.
