Faisal Al Subhan is an Islamic scholar and author known for his legal and methodological writings on civil strife and tribulations (fitan), most notably his treatise Masa'il fi al-Fitan (Issues Concerning Tribulations) .

Identity and Scholarship

His full lineage is Abu Abd Allah Faisal ibn Hayyan ibn Mani' Al Subhan .

In his scholarly writings, Al Subhan focused on establishing foundational legal and theological principles (ta'sil) for navigating times of unrest and discord . In Masa'il fi al-Fitan, published by Mu'assasat al-Rayyan, he organized his study into discrete issues to clarify how Muslims should respond to strife in both knowledge and practice . Rather than merely compiling narrations regarding specific historical or apocalyptic incidents, his method aimed to derive general legal comprehension (fiqh) directly from scriptural texts, transmitted reports (athar), and the stances of the early righteous predecessors (al-salaf) . Within this framework, he placed particular emphasis on warning against armed intra-Muslim conflict (fitnat al-iqtital bayna al-Muslimin), citing its immense gravity and the ease with which individuals might be drawn into bloodshed under claims of religious zeal or worldly competition .

Methodological Positions

Al Subhan's principles regarding eschatology and tribulations have been cited by contemporary scholars, including Muhammad Isma'il al-Muqaddam . Al Subhan formulated guidelines regarding the interpretation of prophecies, distinguishing between different levels of applying texts about tribulations to specific circumstances . He maintained that making a definitive match (tanzil tamm)—by asserting unconditionally that a specific prophecy designates a particular contemporary era or a named individual—is impermissible due to the severe repercussions it causes, including the generation of fresh civil strife not intended by the text .
