F. Abd al-Rahim (d. 1445 AH / 2023 CE) was a linguist, lexicographer, and professor of Arabic linguistics at the Islamic University of Madinah, recognized for his scholarship on Arabic etymology and lexical borrowings .
Education and Academic Career
F. Abd al-Rahim completed his doctoral studies at Al-Azhar University, submitting a dissertation focused on an etymological and critical study of foreign and loanwords recorded in al-Muʿrab by Abu Mansur al-Jawaliqi . In this study, he traced approximately 732 Arabicized entries back to their non-Arabic roots, recorded them in their original scripts, examined the phonetic adaptations they underwent upon entering Arabic, and provided a comprehensive methodological introduction to the field of Arabic etymology .
He subsequently served as a professor of linguistics at the Islamic University of Madinah, where he taught and participated in the academic supervision and defense committees for postgraduate research at the College of Arabic Language .
Scholarly Contributions and Lexicography
Abd al-Rahim devoted much of his research to documenting and analyzing linguistic borrowing (al-taqāruḍ al-lughawī) across different eras of the Arabic language . He maintained that lexical exchange is a natural historical phenomenon that enriches languages, noting the historical influx of Persian, Syriac, Greek, and Ottoman Turkish terms into classical Arabic, as well as modern borrowings from European languages such as English, French, and Italian, and Asian languages like Urdu in contemporary dialects .
To supplement gaps in classical lexicography, he authored al-Qawl al-aṣīl fī-mā fī al-ʿArabiyyah min al-dakhīl (1411 AH), analyzing around five hundred loanwords that had entered Arabic after or outside the scope of al-Jawaliqi's work . Decades after publishing an initial study on modern borrowings in 1393 AH, he published an expanded dictionary, Muʿjam al-dakhīl fī al-lughah al-ʿArabiyyah al-ḥadīthah wa-lahajātihā (1432 AH / 2011 CE), documenting over 1,600 foreign loanwords in Modern Standard Arabic and regional spoken dialects across Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the Levant .
Death
