Emil Badi Yaqoub is a modern scholar of the Arabic language, lexicographer, and editor, best known for his multi-volume reference work al-Mu'jam al-mufassal fi shawahid al-arabiya (The Detailed Dictionary of Arabic Citations).
Scholarly Contributions
Yaqoub devoted extensive research to indexing, cataloging, and verifying linguistic and poetic evidence (shawahid) drawn from classical Arabic grammatical, lexical, and morphological traditions. He spent years in seclusion compiling his magnum opus, al-Mu'jam al-mufassal fi shawahid al-arabiya, which was published in Beirut in 1417 AH (1996 CE), having also been issued in earlier editions focusing on poetic grammatical evidence. The work serves as a widely referenced index among contemporary researchers of Arabic grammar and Quranic exegesis for tracing poetic citations to their primary sources and attributions.
In addition to lexicographical compilation, Yaqoub actively edited and commented on foundational texts of Arabic grammar and literature. His critical work includes annotations on Ibn Ya'ish's Sharh al-mufassal and an edition of Ibn Hisham al-Ansari's grammatical manual Sharh qatr al-nada wa-ball al-sada.
