Dhiab al-Ghamdi is a contemporary Saudi Islamic legal researcher and author based in Ta'if.
Life and scholarship
His full name is Dhiab ibn Sa'd Al Hamdan al-Ghamdi al-Azdi, and his kunya is Abu Safwan. Operating primarily from Ta'if as a religious researcher, his writings focus on pedagogical methodology, legal matters, and the verification of traditional transmission records. In his educational treatise al-Manhaj al-Ilmi li-Tullab al-Ilm al-Shari ("The Methodological Path for Students of Islamic Knowledge"), completed in 1425 AH / 2004 CE, he laid out an organized course of study and reading recommendations for aspiring religious students, which was reviewed and endorsed by Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jibreen. In 1428 AH / 2007 CE, al-Ghamdi finished al-Wijaza fi al-Athbat wal-Ijaza ("The Concise Guide to Transmission Registers and Licenses"), compiling one hundred and twenty transmission registers (athbat) and licenses (ijazat) alongside sixty continuous transmission chains to classical Islamic scholarly authorities.
Reception and assessments
Al-Ghamdi's scholarship has drawn both commendation and critical scrutiny from contemporary religious figures. His documentation in al-Wijaza fi al-Athbat wal-Ijaza received high praise from the scholar Zuhayr al-Shawish, who remarked on the substantial collection of authentic chains gathered in a specialized field where unverified claims often proliferate. Conversely, his critical treatise Zahirat al-Fikr al-Tarbawi ("The Phenomenon of Educational Thought") prompted mixed feedback; while recognizing the general utility of al-Ghamdi's writings, Alawi al-Saqqaf observed that the critique contained exaggerations, misplaced assessments, and excessive elaboration on terminology, arguing that scholarly efforts would be better directed toward broader ideological challenges facing the Muslim community.
