Burhan al-Din Ibn Mazah al-Bukhari (551–616 AH / 1156–1219 CE) was a Hanafi jurist and legal scholar from Transoxiana, best known for his extensive legal compendium, al-Muhit al-Burhani .
Lineage and Education
His full name was Mahmud ibn Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Umar ibn Mazah, with the nisbas al-Bukhari and al-Marghinani; he held the honorific titles Burhan al-Din and Burhan al-Shari'a . He was born in Marghinan into the prominent scholarly and civic dynasty of the Al Mazah (known as the Sudur), whose members held hereditary juristic leadership across the region . His grandfather was the leading jurist Burhan al-A'imma 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Umar ibn Mazah, and his paternal uncle was the jurist Husam al-Din 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, known as al-Sadr al-Shahid .
Ibn Mazah received his primary training in Hanafi jurisprudence from his father, Taj al-Din Ahmad (known as al-Sadr al-Sa'id), and from his uncle Husam al-Din 'Umar . He also resided for a period in Samarqand, where he engaged in issuing fatwas and compiling legal rulings and uncommon transmitted variants . Among his notable students was his son, Tahir ibn Mahmud, known as Sadr al-Islam .
Scholarly Standing and Reception
Ibn Mazah was recognized among the foremost Hanafi authorities of Transoxiana for his mastery of doctrinal differences and the applied branches of law (furu'), being ranked by later biographers among the jurists capable of independent legal deduction within specific legal questions (al-mujtahidun fi al-masa'il) . His major jurisprudential compendium, al-Muhit al-Burhani fi al-Fiqh al-Nu'mani, systematically combined the primary authoritative texts (zahir al-riwaya) of the early Hanafi school with secondary transmissions (al-nawadir), legal precedents, and contemporary judicial cases (al-waqi'at) . He also compiled a condensed reference work drawn from these materials, titled al-Dhakira al-Burhaniyya .
Later jurists often conflated his al-Muhit al-Burhani with al-Muhit al-Radawi, authored by Radi al-Din al-Sarakhsi; scholars such as Ibn al-Hinna'i noted this recurring confusion and distinguished between the two by referring to the larger multi-volume work as al-Muhit al-Burhani and the other as al-Muhit al-Sarakhsi . Scholars in the central and western Islamic lands, including Ibn Amir Hajj and Ibn Nujaym, observed that al-Muhit al-Burhani was largely unavailable in their regions in their respective times, which led some to restrict issuing fatwas directly from it on the grounds of its rarity there .
Death
Ibn Mazah died in Bukhara in 616 AH (1219 CE) . Another biographical report places his death earlier, around 570 AH (1174 CE) .
