Binyamin bin Durmush Arul (Muhammad Bünyamin Erul) is a Turkish scholar of Hadith and a professor at the Faculty of Theology at Ankara University, recognized for his research on early Hadith comprehension and his critical edition of classical Hadith literature .

Academic Career and Research

Arul pursued his academic training in Turkey, completing his doctoral dissertation in 1996 at Ankara on the early comprehension of prophetic traditions among the Prophet's companions, which was subsequently published as Sahabenin Sünnet Anlayışı (The Companions' Understanding of the Sunnah) in 1999 . He joined the Department of Hadith at the Faculty of Theology at Ankara University, rising through academic ranks from assistant professor to full professor .

His scholarship focuses on Hadith criticism, textual analysis, and the historiography of Hadith studies in Turkey. In his Arabic article Tasarrufat al-ruwah fi mutun al-marwiyyat ("Transmitters' Interventions in Hadith Texts"), published in the journal of Ankara University's Faculty of Theology, he examined the textual alterations introduced during transmission . He also compiled al-Mu‘allafat fi al-hadith wa-‘ulumihi fi al-‘ahd al-jumhuri fi Turkiya (Hadith Literature and Its Sciences in Republican Turkey), a bibliographic survey classifying academic dissertations and publications across three distinct phases of the Turkish Republican era (1924–1949, 1949–1982, and 1982–2003) .

Editorial Work and Reception

Arul undertook a critical edition of Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi's treatise on textual critique, al-Ijabah li-Irad ma Istadrakathu ‘A’ishah ‘ala al-Sahabah (The Response to What Aisha Rectified Regarding the Companions) . After identifying an additional manuscript of the work in Istanbul and publishing an initial study in Turkish, he was encouraged by the Hadith scholar Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut to produce an authoritative Arabic edition .

To execute the project, Arul traveled from Ankara to Amman, where he and al-Arna'ut collated the text against original manuscript witnesses over five days . The resulting work was completed with introductory studies and detailed critical apparatus . Al-Arna'ut commended Arul's scholarly rigour and editorial precision, noting that his journey to consult specialists revived the traditional practice of traveling in pursuit of religious knowledge .
