Battal al-Rukbi (d. 633 AH / 1235–1236 CE) was a Yemeni Shafi'i jurist and philologist, best known for his legal-lexicographical treatise al-Nazm al-Mustadhab fi Tafsir Gharib Alfaz al-Muhadhdhab .
Lineage and Background
His full name is Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Battal al-Rukbi al-Yamani, also recorded as Battal ibn Ahmad ibn Sulayman ibn Battal . Later biographical sources also refer to him by the honorific title Shams al-Din . His nisba, al-Rukbi, connects him to the tribe of Rukb, an offshoot of Quda'a and the Ash'arite lineage settled in various parts of Yemen . He hailed specifically from the fortress region of al-Dumluwah, residing in the village of Dhi Ya'mid on Jabal al-Harim .
According to the historian al-Baha' al-Janadi, he came to be known by the moniker Battal—which literally denotes idleness or inactivity—because the scholars and intellectuals of his era applied the term as an antiphrasis to reflect the opposite of his manifest erudition and perfection .
Education and Scholarly Career
Al-Rukbi studied Shafi'i jurisprudence under Ibrahim ibn Hudayq and received transmission and instruction from the eminent philologist and traditionist al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Saghani . He established a scholarly household in his hometown, where he taught jurisprudence, grammar, and related disciplines . Among his notable students was the Yemeni jurist Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Amiri al-Wa'lani, who transmitted his works to other regions of Yemen, as well as his own sons Imran and Ismail and his grandson al-Nafis ibn Abd Allah .
His scholarly contribution centered on the philological analysis of legal literature, most prominently in al-Nazm al-Mustadhab fi Tafsir Gharib Alfaz al-Muhadhdhab (The Pleasant Arrangement in Explaining the Rare Words of al-Muhadhdhab), composed to elucidate the rare and difficult vocabulary found in Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi's foundational Shafi'i manual, al-Muhadhdhab . In that work, al-Rukbi distinguished his methodology from earlier commentators by systematically tracing rare derivatives back to their lexical roots (ta'sil al-ma'ani) using major lexicons and works on rare Quranic and hadith vocabulary, while maintaining conciseness and avoiding tangential legal debates . He also compiled a forty-hadith collection (al-Arba'in) that was transmitted by later scholars in Yemen .
Death
