Bassam al-Asali (d. 1439 AH / 2017–2018 CE) was a modern historian and author best known for his fifteen-volume historical study Silsilat Jihad Sha'b al-Jaza'ir (The Struggle of the Algerian People Series) .
Historical Work and Methodology
Al-Asali specialized in military history and anti-colonial resistance movements in the Arab and Islamic world, focusing in particular on naval defense, liberation struggles, and revolutionary warfare . In compiling his multi-volume study Silsilat Jihad Sha'b al-Jaza'ir, published in Beirut by Dar al-Nafa'is, he drew upon archival documents and historical records . His documentary research was assisted by data and documentation provided through Algerian institutions, notably the Ministry of National Defense, the Political Commissariat, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Mujahideen .
In articulating his method, al-Asali noted the challenge of balancing the breadth required for a comprehensive overview of long historical eras with the specific tactical and political details of individual campaigns and uprisings . His studies frequently appended primary documentary selections, including the text of historical treaties, confiscation decrees, official communiqués, and wartime declarations .
