Anwar al-Jundi (d. 1422 AH / 2002 CE) was an Egyptian Islamic thinker, essayist, and literary historian known for his extensive studies countering Westernization and documenting modern Arabic intellectual debates .

Life and Career

Al-Jundi maintained ties to Dayrut in Middle Upper Egypt and spent much of his working life in Cairo . He was an active contributor to prominent cultural and Islamic periodicals throughout the twentieth century, notably Ahmad Hasan al-Zayyat’s literary journal Majallat al-Risala, where he published critical essays, reflections, and interviews with contemporary literary figures . In his journalistic and essayistic writings, he addressed contemporary cultural affairs and authored biographical accounts of prominent reformers and scholars .

Intellectual Thought

Al-Jundi focused heavily on analyzing cultural Westernization, colonial ideological strategies, and modern intellectual currents in the Arab and Islamic world. In his historical study Tarikh al-Ghazw al-Fikri wa-l-Ta'rib Khilal Marhalat Ma Bayn al-Harbayn al-Alamiyyatayn ("History of Intellectual Invasion and Westernization Between the Two World Wars"), he traced ideological conflicts, cultural Westernization, and the clash between Western colonial influence and Islamic culture in the interwar period . In al-Sunna al-Nabawiyya fi Muwajahat Shubuhat al-Istishraq ("The Prophetic Sunna in Confronting the Doubts of Orientalism"), he defended the authority, transmission, and early codification of the Sunna against Orientalist critiques . His al-Ma'arik al-Adabiyya ("The Literary Battles") documented twentieth-century ideological and literary controversies across the Arab world regarding prose, poetry, language, and criticism.

A major pillar of al-Jundi’s discourse was safeguarding Islamic identity and historical continuity. He opposed calls to sever contemporary Muslim societies from their classical heritage or to subject Islamic sources to foreign philosophical frameworks such as Cartesian doubt . He also argued against Pharaonist ideological tendencies that sought to prioritize pre-Islamic Egyptian antiquity over Egypt's Arab and Islamic identity .

Standing and Assessment

Al-Jundi was recognized by contemporaries as a dedicated researcher with broad familiarity with Arabic literary debates and Islamic issues . While appreciated for his persistent defense of Islamic thought against ideological adversaries, some academic reviewers noted that his compilations occasionally cited extensive quotations without full bibliographic references to the original sources .

Death

Al-Jundi died in 1422 AH (2002 CE).
