Ali al-Salus (d. 1445 AH / 2023 CE) was an Egyptian jurist, legal theorist, and specialist in Islamic economics and comparative sectarian studies, best known for his extensive critical study Ma'a al-Ithna 'Ashariyya fi al-Usul wa al-Furu' (With the Twelvers in Fundamentals and Branches) .

Academic Career and Positions

Ali ibn Ahmad al-Salus served for many years as a professor in the Department of Jurisprudence and Legal Theory (Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh) within the College of Sharia at Qatar University . He was a member of the Islamic Fiqh Academy under the Muslim World League in Mecca and a frequent participant and research contributor at the assemblies of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy affiliated with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation . In Cairo, he studied with and held close scholarly ties to the prominent philologist and editor Mahmud Muhammad Shakir .

Scholarly Contributions

Al-Salus devoted much of his scholarly work to Islamic banking, commercial contracts, and modern financial applications. His research evaluated modern transactions against classical jurisprudence across the major legal schools, addressing topics such as currency exchange, inflation, installment sales, manufacturing contracts (istisna'), letters of guarantee, and penalty clauses . These studies were consolidated in his multi-volume collection Mawsu'at al-Qadaya al-Fiqhiyya al-Mu'asira wa al-Iqtisad al-Islami (Encyclopedia of Contemporary Jurisprudential Issues and Islamic Economics) .

He was also recognized for his critical examinations of Twelver Shi'i theological, Hadith, and legal traditions. At the request of the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Jad al-Haqq Ali Jad al-Haqq, he penned al-Muraja'at al-Muftarat 'ala Shaykh al-Azhar al-Bishri (The Fabricated Consultations Ascribed to Shaykh al-Azhar al-Bishri) to contest the authenticity of the widely cited Shi'i polemical text al-Muraja'at . His comparative sectarian analyses were further expanded in Ma'a al-Ithna 'Ashariyya fi al-Usul wa al-Furu', assessing Shi'i foundational texts against Sunni scholarship .
