Ali ibn Rumayh al-Rumayhi is a contemporary Saudi researcher in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), known for his study al-Ara al-Fiqhiyya al-Muasira al-Mahkum Alayha bil-Shudhudh fi al-Ibadat (Contemporary Jurisprudential Opinions Judged as Anomalous in Ritual Worship).
Academic Background and Career
His full name is Ali ibn Rumayh ibn Ali al-Rumayhi. He pursued postgraduate studies in Islamic jurisprudence at the College of Sharia at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh. In 1439 AH, he defended his master's thesis surveying and analyzing modern irregular legal opinions regarding acts of ritual worship (ibadat). The examination committee consisted of Sulayman ibn Ahmad al-Mulhim, Sa'd ibn Turki al-Khathlan, and Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Khalil, who approved the thesis with an "excellent" evaluation. His thesis was later published in Riyadh in 1440 AH (2019 CE).
Scholarly Method and Reception
In his jurisprudential research, al-Rumayhi adopted a systematic approach to anomalous opinions: he defined each case, identified the precise crux of the anomaly, explained the grounds on which it was deemed irregular, cited the differing viewpoints of scholars alongside their evidence, discussed their arguments, outlined the reasons for divergence, and concluded with a legal assessment.
His scholarship was commended by his examiners; Sa'd ibn Turki al-Khathlan praised his methodology and agreed with most of his classifications of anomalous rulings while noting divergence on a select few, and Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Khalil commended his rigorous verification, legal analysis, and precision in addressing contemporary irregular rulings.
