Activism and Community Work in Andalusia
Following Spain's transition toward religious freedom legislation in 1980, al-Kattani visited Cordoba in July of that year (Sha'ban 1400 AH), met with resident Spanish and Moroccan Muslims, proposed the establishment of the Islamic Association of Cordoba (Jam'iyyat Qurtuba al-Islamiyya), and assisted in drafting its bylaws . In May 1981, he signed as a witness to a cooperation agreement in Granada between the Cordoban association and the Society for Return to Islam in Spain .
On 3 August 1988, he attended an official ceremony in Castellar, in the province of Cadiz, representing his father when the municipal council named its main thoroughfare "al-Muntasir al-Kattani Street" in appreciation of the elder Kattani's support for the Andalusian Islamic community . In 1989, at the conclusion of an Andalusian conference, he was elected co-president of the Supreme Andalusian Council alongside Muhammad Ramirez Faraj to strengthen Andalusian cultural ties across the diaspora and the homeland, and served on the organizing committee tasked with preparing for an Islamic university in Cordoba . In his major work Inbiath al-Islam fi al-Andalus, he chronicled the endurance of Islamic identity and the late-twentieth-century organizational development of Muslim communities across Spain .
