Life and Judicial Career
His full name was Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Khalil al-Tarabulsi . Affiliated with the Hanafi school of law, he pursued judicial office and was appointed as the judge (qadi) of Jerusalem .
Judicial Thought and Reception
Al-Tarabulsi organized the practice of Hanafi jurisprudence and court governance in Mu'in al-Hukkam fima yataraddad bayn al-khasmayn min al-ahkam, dividing the science of adjudication into three main parts: the foundational principles upon which legal judgments are established, the evidentiary proofs and standards employed to settle disputes, and the rules governing Sharia-compliant governance (al-siyasa al-shariyya) . He is also credited with al-Istighna', a commentary on al-Wiqaya .
The bibliographer Haji Khalifa recorded marginal notations from manuscripts that debated the authorship of Mu'in al-Hukkam, reporting that scholars such as 'Arab-zadah attributed it to Ala al-Din al-Aswad, while Ali ibn al-Hinna'i ascribed it to Husam al-Din al-Kawsaj, because of internal references to al-Istighna' . In scholarly evaluations of his legal sources, commentators also noted that al-Tarabulsi incorporated extensive material from Tabsirat al-Hukkam by the Maliki jurist Ibn Farhun without citing him .
