al-Zubayr ibn Adi (d. 131 AH / 748–749 CE) was an early Kufan hadith narrator, jurist, and the judge of Rayy .
Identity and Background
Al-Zubayr ibn Adi al-Hamdani al-Yami, whose kunya was Abu Adi, was originally from Kufa before relocating to the east and settling in Rayy, where he held the post of qadi . Early biographical sources occasionally note distinctions between him and his contemporary al-Zubayr ibn Arabi of Basra to avoid textual confusion between their names .
During the Umayyad campaigns in the east, al-Zubayr accompanied the commander Qutayba ibn Muslim in Khurasan . His teacher Ibrahim al-Nakha'i had advised him beforehand: "Fear Allah, lest you be killed alongside Qutayba" . Later, Sufyan al-Thawri traveled to Khurasan and heard hadiths directly from al-Zubayr in Marw .
Scholarship and Transmission
Al-Zubayr belonged to the generation of the Successors (Tabi'un) . He transmitted hadith from the Companion Anas ibn Malik, as well as prominent senior authorities such as Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Abu Wa'il Shaqiq ibn Salama, Mus'ab ibn Sa'd, Talha ibn Musarrif, Tariq ibn Shihab, and al-Harith al-A'war .
Among those who transmitted from him were leading figures including Sufyan al-Thawri, Malik ibn Mighwal, Mis'ar ibn Kidam, Qurra ibn Khalid, Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i (who was older than him), and Ismail ibn Abi Khalid .
Reception and Standing
Al-Zubayr was widely praised by biographical authorities as a reliable and righteous traditionist. Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Yahya ibn Ma'in, Abu Hatim al-Razi, al-Nasa'i, and Ya'qub ibn Sufyan al-Fasawi declared him trustworthy (thiqa) . Ahmad also described him as sound and balanced in hadith (salih al-hadith, muqarib al-hadith) . Ahmad al-Ijli described him as a firmly established scholar (thiqa thabt) from the circle of Ibrahim al-Nakha'i and an adherent of the Sunna, while al-Bukhari and Ibn Hibban highlighted his devotion and piety .
A distinct critical issue in hadith literature surrounds a notebook attributed to al-Zubayr containing over one hundred reports from Anas ibn Malik. Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi remarked that scholars recognized only a single authentic hadith transmitted by al-Zubayr on the authority of Anas—namely, the prophetic saying: لا يأتي عليكم عام إلا شر من الذي كان قبله ("No year comes upon you except that which follows it is worse") . Later critics such as Ibn Adi, al-Daraqutni, and al-Hakim al-Naysaburi emphasized that the extensive collection of uncorroborated traditions under al-Zubayr's name was fabricated by the narrator Bishr ibn al-Husayn, affirming that al-Zubayr himself was upright and entirely exonerated from the fabrications .
Death
Al-Zubayr died in Rayy in 131 AH (748–749 CE) while serving as its judge . The governor of Rayy, Nubata ibn Hanzala, led the funeral prayers over him .
