Muhyi al-Din al-Yunini (682–747 AH / 1283–1346 CE) was a Syrian Hanbali jurist and hadith scholar from Baalbek, known for his hadith transmissions and the compilation documenting his authorities, Mashayakhat Muhyi al-Din al-Yunini.
Life and Education
His full name was 'Abd al-Qadir ibn 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi al-Husayn al-Yunini al-Ba'labakki, bearing the kunya Abu Muhammad—and in some records Abu 'Abd Allah—alongside the honorific Muhyi al-Din. He was born into a prominent scholarly family in 682 AH (1283 CE), though another report places his birth around 680 AH. He was the son of the hadith scholar Sharaf al-Din al-Yunini and Taj al-Sharaf bint Ibn 'Ali ibn Hibat Allah, and his siblings included Amat al-'Aziz and Sakina.
Raised in a tradition of learning, he began hearing hadith in his youth. In 689 AH, he attended the audition of Sahih al-Bukhari transmitted by his father as read by Amin al-Din Muhammad ibn Khawlan. In addition to his father, his principal teachers included Fakhr al-Din Ibn al-Bukhari and Ibn al-Kamal. He also traveled to Egypt, where he heard hadith from local masters.
Scholarly Standing and Transmission
Al-Yunini acquired broad proficiency in hadith transmission and Hanbali jurisprudence. The traditionist and historian al-Dhahabi studied alongside him extensively in Baalbek, narrated from him, and extracted a specialized hadith selection (juz') for him, describing him as a virtuous and learned jurist. His authorities and transmissions were systematically arranged by the Hanbali scholar Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Sa'd al-Maqdisi in his Mashyakha.
In his locality, al-Yunini occupied a position of distinction and social prominence following the heritage of his forebears. Later biographical accounts noted his generosity, dignity, and fine demeanor. In family and civic affairs, he was judged by contemporary legal authorities as the most upright and suitable of his lineage to oversee the historic family endowment (waqf) attributed to Sani al-Dawla. Among those who transmitted from him was his son, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad.
Death
Al-Yunini died in the month of Rabi' al-Thani 747 AH (July–August 1346 CE).
