Abu al-Fadl Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Haydar al-Waeli al-San'ani is a Yemeni Hadith scholar based in Sana'a, known for his expertise in Hadith transmission and his multi-volume reference work Nuzhat al-Albab fi Qawl al-Tirmidhi "Wa fi al-Bab".
Scholarly Standing and Works
Al-Waeli was described by his student Fadl Murad as a prominent hadith scholar and referred to as "the memorizer of the Arabian Peninsula" (hafiz al-jazirah). He was noted for his extensive memorization of prophetic traditions with their chains of transmission (asānīd), and in particular for having memorized the collection of al-Tirmidhi along with its chains, hidden defects (ʿilal), and biographical evaluations of narrators (rijāl).
His major contribution to hadith studies is Nuzhat al-Albab fi Qawl al-Tirmidhi «Wa fi al-Bab» ("Delight of the Minds Regarding al-Tirmidhi's Statement 'And in this Chapter'"), published in six volumes in 1426 AH by Dar Ibn al-Jawzi. The work provides an exhaustive attribution and critical analysis (takhrīj) of the narrations from various Companions referenced concisely by al-Tirmidhi under his standard formula wa fī al-bāb ("and regarding this chapter [there are narrations from...]") throughout his Jāmiʿ. In his encomium for the book, Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Hashidi noted that al-Waeli had devoted himself to the study of al-Tirmidhi's collection for nearly a quarter of a century while compiling the material for this project.
Teaching
Al-Waeli taught hadith sciences, including narrator criticism, hidden defects (ʿilal), hadith nomenclature (muṣṭalaḥ al-ḥadīth), Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī. Among those who studied these subjects under him was Fadl Murad, whom he granted an authorization (ijāzah) in both transmission and comprehension (riwāyatan wa-dirāyatan).
