Abu Ishaq al-Raqiq al-Qayrawani (d. c. 425 AH / 1034 CE) was an Ifriqiyan historian, court secretary, and man of letters from Kairouan, best known for his foundational chronicle Tarikh Ifriqiya wa-al-Maghrib (History of Ifriqiya and the Maghrib) .
Life and Chancery Career
His full name was Ibrahim ibn al-Qasim, known by the epithet al-Raqiq or Ibn al-Raqiq . He was born and raised in Kairouan, though the exact year of his birth remains unrecorded . He served as a court secretary (katib al-hadra) under the Zirid dynasty for nearly half a century, discharging official secretarial duties across the reigns of three successive rulers: al-Mansur, Badis ibn Ziri, and al-Mu'izz ibn Badis .
In 388 AH (998 CE), Badis ibn Ziri sent him on a diplomatic mission to Cairo to deliver gifts to the Fatimid caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah . Following his return to North Africa, he remained in office at Kairouan, where he spent the rest of his life and died, most likely around 425 AH (1034 CE) .
Scholarly Standing and Reception
Al-Raqiq was widely recognized by contemporaries and later chroniclers as the preeminent chronicler of North African history and a master of courtly prose . His contemporary Ibn Rashiq praised him as a fluid and precise poet with a refined nature, noting that his reputation was dominated by his administrative prose, historiography, and compiling of historical reports, in which he was the most adept of men . In his Muqaddimah, Ibn Khaldun described him as the authoritative historian of Ifriqiya and the dynasties that ruled from Kairouan, observing that subsequent historians were merely his imitators .
Alongside his historical writing, al-Raqiq was an active participant in literary gatherings and courtly leisure, authoring the prominent bacchic anthology Qutb al-Surur fi Awsaf al-Anbidha wa al-Khumur (The Pivot of Pleasure on the Descriptions of Fermented Drinks and Wines) . Because of his convivial lifestyle and participation in wine sessions, several jurists regarded his solitary historical transmissions with caution, and critics noted that his taste for entertaining anecdotes sometimes led him to record unverified accounts .
