Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Said al-Rajraji (d. after 633 AH / 1236 CE) was a North African Maliki jurist, legal theorist, and grammarian, best known for his comprehensive legal commentary Manahij al-Tahsil wa Nataij Lataif al-Tawil fi Sharh al-Mudawwana wa Hall Mushkilatiha ("The Paths of Acquisition and the Fruits of Subtle Interpretation in Explaining al-Mudawwana and Resolving Its Difficulties") .

Life and travels

Al-Rajraji belonged to the Regraga Berber confederation of the Maghrib, and manuscript records also associate him with the regional nisba al-Jazuli . Details of his early education remain scarce in classical biographical dictionaries . He traveled to the East to perform the Hajj pilgrimage and engaged with scholarly circles there . During his voyage by sea, he met the prominent grammarian Abu Musa Isa al-Jazuli (also recorded as al-Farmusi al-Jazuli), discussing various grammatical issues with him . While in the East, a significant number of Eastern students and scholars studied under him and transmitted knowledge on his authority . He completed the composition of his legal commentary in 633 AH (1235–1236 CE) and lived beyond that date .

Scholarly standing

Al-Rajraji was recognized by biographers as an accomplished jurist in applied jurisprudence (furu'), a memorizer (hafiz), and a scholar well versed in Arabic grammar as well as the two foundational disciplines (al-aslayn: theology and legal theory) . In his major work, Manahij al-Tahsil, he commented extensively on al-Mudawwana, synthesizing earlier interpretations and drawing heavily upon the determinations of Ibn Rushd al-Jadd and Qadi Iyad, as well as the juristic extractions (takhrijat) of Abu al-Hasan al-Lakhmi . His primary biographical notice was preserved by Ahmad Baba al-Tinbukti, who reported that he copied al-Rajraji's entry directly from the handwriting of the Maghribi jurist Abu al-Abbas al-Wansharisi .
