al-Numan Abd al-Mutaal al-Qadi is a modern scholar of Arabic literature and editor of classical texts, known for his critical study Shi'r al-Futuh al-Islamiyya fi Sadr al-Islam ("The Poetry of the Islamic Conquests in Early Islam") .

Scholarly Contribution

Al-Qadi focused his research on early Islamic literature, particularly the verse composed by Arab Muslim fighters during the period of the early Islamic conquests . In Shi'r al-Futuh al-Islamiyya fi Sadr al-Islam, he compiled conquest poetry from scattered literary, historical, and geographical sources, subjecting it to critical analysis . He categorized the poets of the conquests into three groups: poets who had already composed verse in the pre-Islamic era (exemplified by Amr ibn Ma'dikarib al-Zubaydi), those whose poetic output was stimulated directly by the events of the conquests (exemplified by al-Qa'qa' ibn 'Amr al-Tamimi), and anonymous contributors . His work highlighted the religious and spiritual dimensions of this poetry, the adaptation of older themes, the emergence of new motifs such as longing for the homeland, and artistic characteristics such as brevity and simplicity .

In addition to his literary studies, al-Qadi contributed to the editing of classical Arab-Islamic heritage, preparing a critical edition of the Andalusian poetic anthology Rayat al-mubarrizin wa-ghayat al-mumayyazin ("Banners of the Champions and Emblems of the Distinguished") by Ibn Sa'id al-Andalusi, published in Cairo in 1393 AH / 1973 CE .
