Abu al-Abbas al-Mustaghfiri (c. 350–432 AH / 961–1041 CE) was a Transoxanian hadith scholar, Hanafi jurist, and historian from Nasaf, recognized as the leading hadith authority of his region in his era and known for compilations such as Fada'il al-Qur'an (Virtues of the Quran) and Ta'rikh Nasaf (History of Nasaf) .
Lineage and Early Life
His full lineage is Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mu'tazz ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mustaghfir ibn al-Fath ibn Idris al-Mustaghfiri al-Nasafi . His ancestral nisba, al-Mustaghfiri, derives from his forebear al-Mustaghfir . His father, Abu Ali Muhammad ibn al-Mu'tazz (318–374 AH), was also a scholar in Nasaf . Al-Mustaghfiri was born in or shortly after 350 AH . He served as the official orator (khatib) of Nasaf, an office later occupied by his son, Abu Dharr Muhammad ibn Ja'far .
Education and Travels
Al-Mustaghfiri did not travel to Iraq, but he journeyed across Khurasan and resided for periods in Marw and Sarakhs . In Sarakhs, he studied extensively under Abu Ali Zahir ibn Ahmad al-Sarakhsi . In Nasaf, he heard from teachers including Abu Sahl Harun ibn Ahmad al-Astarabadhi and Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Zurr al-Razi; in Bukhara, he learned from the historian Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ahmad Ghunjar; and in Marw, from Abu al-Haytham Muhammad ibn Makki al-Kushmayhani . He also studied under Ibrahim ibn Luqman, Ibn Mandah, and the jurist Abu Ali al-Husayn al-Nasafi .
He transmitted hadith to a wide circle of scholars, including the hadith masters al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Samarqandi and Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad al-Nakhshabi, as well as al-Hasan ibn Abd al-Malik al-Nasafi, Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Kasani, Abu Mansur Muhammad ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Sam'ani, and Ismail ibn Muhammad al-Nawhi .
Scholarly Standing and Evaluation
Al-Mustaghfiri was regarded as the foremost hadith scholar of Transoxiana in his time, unmatched in that region for his breadth of compilation and understanding of hadith literature . Biographers evaluated him as trustworthy (thiqah) and truthful (saduq) in his personal transmission . However, critics such as Ibn Abd al-Hadi and al-Dawudi noted that he recorded fabricated and unverified reports in his thematic compilations—such as his biographical dictionary Ma'rifat al-Sahabah (Knowledge of the Companions)—without addressing or explicitly noting their defects, a tendency shared by several other hadith compilers of his era .
Death
Al-Mustaghfiri died in Nasaf at the end of Jumada al-Ula in 432 AH (1041 CE), at approximately eighty years of age .
