al-Mukhtar al-Mishri al-Maqrush is a Libyan scholar of Quranic recitation and the imam and instructor of tajwid at the al-Zahra' al-'Atiq Mosque. He is known for his instructional manual on Quranic recitation, Kayfa Taqra' al-Qur'an al-Karim bi-Riwayat al-Imam Qalun 'an Nafi' al-Madani ("How to Recite the Noble Qur'an According to the Transmission of Imam Qalun from Nafi' al-Madani").
Education and Teaching
Al-Maqrush studied the rules of recitation under several scholars, including Muhammad Wuld 'Abd Allah al-Muritani, Muhammad 'Atiyyah Dirah, Muhammad al-'Akkari, and 'Abd al-Hakim al-Juwayli. He served as an imam and taught the rules of tajwid at the al-Zahra' al-'Atiq Mosque. Observing that the transmission of Qalun from Nafi' al-Madani was the predominant reading memorized across Libyan Quranic schools yet suffered from a scarcity of accessible reference works in local libraries, he composed Kayfa Taqra' al-Qur'an al-Karim bi-Riwayat al-Imam Qalun 'an Nafi' al-Madani to provide students with a clear guide to recitation.
In his pedagogical approach, he prioritized ease of understanding, restricting the text primarily to the preferred mode of performance (al-wajh al-muqaddam) to avoid confusing learners, and utilized accessible terminology such as al-madd al-mazyadi alongside standard terms like al-madd al-far'i. He completed the work on Tuesday morning, 1 Safar 1419 AH (26 May 1998 CE).
