Lineage and Early Life
His full lineage is Abu Ali al-Muhsin ibn Abi al-Qasim Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Fahm Dawud ibn Ibrahim ibn Tamim al-Tanukhi . His family traced its origins to the rulers of Tanukh, from the tribal confederation of Quda'a in Yemen . He was born in Basra in 327 AH / 939 CE, though Yaqut al-Hamawi reports a birth date of 329 AH .
He was raised in a prominent scholarly and judicial household; his father, Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanukhi, was a judge, Hanafi jurist, and poet . He began hearing hadith in Basra in 333 AH, receiving transmissions from scholars such as Abu al-Abbas al-Athram, Abu Bakr al-Suli, and al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya .
Career and Judicial Offices
Al-Tanukhi held multiple administrative and judicial offices across Iraq and Khuzestan. In 346 AH, he served as the assay officer at the mint in Suq al-Ahwaz . The Abbasid caliph al-Muti' lillah subsequently appointed him to the judgeship of Jazirat Ibn Umar, Askar Mukram, and Ramhurmuz . He also served as a deputy judge during his father's lifetime . Over a twenty-year period beginning in 360 AH, he compiled his extensive collection Nishwar al-muhadara wa-akhbar al-mudhakarah (The Table-Talk of a Mesopotamian Judge), setting a condition for himself not to transcribe material from written books, but rather to record oral testimonies and recollections directly heard in scholarly and courtly gatherings . He also composed al-Faraj ba'd al-shidda (Relief After Distress), an anthology arranged into fourteen chapters of narratives and verse illustrating deliverance from adversity, as well as al-Mustajad min fi'lat al-ajwad (The Choice Selection of Noble Deeds of the Generous) .

Biographers recognized al-Tanukhi as an accomplished prose stylist, poet, and chronicler of court history whose hadith auditions were sound . Abu Mansur al-Tha'alibi praised him as "the crescent of that moon, the branch of that tree, the upright witness to his father's glory and virtue, and his successor after his passing" . The poet Abu Abd Allah ibn al-Hajjaj composed verses praising his judicial demeanor and youthful intellect .
His son, Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn al-Muhsin al-Tanukhi, continued the family's literary tradition and studied closely with the poet Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri .
