Abd al-Rahman al-Mughayri (d. 1364 AH / 1945 CE) was a Najdi genealogist and historian from Marat in the region of al-Washm, best known for his genealogical work al-Muntakhab fi Dhikr Nasab Qabail al-Arab .

Biography and Lineage

His full name was Abd al-Rahman ibn Hamad ibn Zayd al-Mughayri al-Lami al-Ta'i al-Najdi . He belonged to Al Mughira, a prominent branch of the Banu Lam tribe descending from Tayy, and was based in the town of Marat within the al-Washm district of Najd . He died in 1364 AH (1945 CE) .

Scholarly Contribution and Reception

Al-Mughayri focused extensively on the genealogies, branches, and historical settlements of ancient and contemporary Arabian tribes . His genealogical compilation, al-Muntakhab fi Dhikr Nasab Qaba'il al-Arab (The Selected Account Concerning the Lineage of Arab Tribes), became a widely referenced source on Peninsular lineages and went through multiple printings; later editions included two appended historical treatises by the scholar Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Mani on the rulers and judges of Unayzah .

While his writings remain frequently consulted by later researchers of Arabian tribal lineages, certain genealogical claims in his work drew critical scrutiny . Scholars such as Abu Abd al-Rahman Ibn Aqil al-Zahiri noted instances where al-Mughayri's assertions lacked documented textual grounding or exhibited contradictions across different passages of his text, such as his conflicting classifications regarding the lineage of Banu Hajar .
