Shams al-Din al-Minhaji al-Asyuti (813–880 AH / 1410–1475 CE) was an Egyptian Shafi'i jurist and man of letters, best known for his authoritative legal formulary manual Jawahir al-Uqud wa-Mu'in al-Qudat wa-al-Muwaqqi'in wa-al-Shuhud ("The Jewels of Contracts and the Aid of Judges, Document-Drafters, and Witnesses").
Early Life and Education
Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Abd al-Khaliq al-Minhaji al-Asyuti was born in Asyut in Upper Egypt in 813 AH (1410 CE), though a birth year of 810 AH is also recorded. He was raised in Asyut, where he memorized the Quran under Sa'd al-Din al-Wahi. In addition to the Quran, his early studies included the memorization of standard foundational texts, notably al-Umdah, al-Nawawi's al-Arba'in, and the poetic treatise al-Shatibiyyah. He read Shafi'i jurisprudence under several scholars in his home region, including al-Zaki al-Maydumi, Shams al-Din ibn Abd al-Rahim, and Badr al-Din ibn al-Khallal.
Travels and Later Career
Al-Minhaji al-Asyuti traveled to Mecca and resided there (jawara) for a period. During his stay in Mecca in 856 AH, he met the historian and traditionist al-Sakhawi and recited to him verses from an ode he had composed in praise of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani. He later settled in Cairo, where he met al-Sakhawi again in 873 AH.
He was recognized as a proficient jurist, notary specialist, and writer. In the field of judicial and notarial practice, he composed Jawahir al-Uqud wa-Mu'in al-Qudat wa-al-Muwaqqi'in wa-al-Shuhud, an extensive manual regulating legal formularies (shurut), court records, and witness testimony. He also authored Ithaf al-Akhissa bi-Fada'il al-Masjid al-Aqsa ("The Gift of the Elite on the Virtues of al-Aqsa Mosque"), an important work addressing the sacred topography, history, and religious merits of Jerusalem and the Levant.
