Biography and Scholarly Contribution

His full name is Abu Bakr ibn Hasan ibn 'Abd Allah al-Kashnawi al-Maliki. Adhering to the Maliki school of law, he dedicated his scholarly efforts to elucidating classical legal texts.

Al-Kashnawi's primary legal contribution is Ashal al-Madarik, an extensive commentary on Irshad al-Salik, the Maliki legal primer authored by the Baghdadi jurist Shihab al-Din Ibn 'Askar al-Baghdadi (d. 732 AH). In this work, al-Kashnawi unpacks the concise formulations of the base text, systematically clarifying rulings across standard areas of jurisprudence, ranging from ritual purification and acts of worship to social transactions and jihad.

The prophetic traditions cited within Ashal al-Madarik were later cataloged and evaluated in a specialized study by al-Fatih al-Hibr 'Umar Ahmad, who analyzed a total of 764 narrations (including repetitions) and classified them according to their grades of authenticity.
