Abu Muhammad al-Jurjani (409–489 AH / 1018–1096 CE) was a Shafi'i jurist, hadith scholar, judge, and historian from Gorgan (Jurjan).
Life and Education
Abu Muhammad ‘Abd Allah ibn Yusuf al-Qadi al-Jurjani was born in Gorgan in 409 AH, though another report places his birth in 407 AH. He came from a scholarly household; his maternal uncle was the hadith critic and historian Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al-Zabahi al-Jurjani. He traveled with his maternal uncle to Nishapur to study and transmit hadith. Among the teachers from whom he heard transmissions was the jurist and judge of Tabaran, Abu Ali al-Iraqi al-Tusi. In addition to his scholarship, he served as a judge (qadi).
Scholarly Activity and Death
Al-Jurjani was recognized for his expertise in Shafi'i jurisprudence, biographical history, and hadith criticism. In hadith analysis, he produced ‘Illat al-hadith al-musalsal fi yawm al-‘idayn ("The Defect of the Pattern-Chained Hadith on the Day of the Two Eids"), an analytical treatise investigating the transmission flaws and routes of the patterned Eid tradition. He also recorded juristic narrations in Kitab al-Fuqaha' ("The Book of Jurists") and compiled onomastic research in al-Mu‘jam fi al-mushtabah ("The Dictionary of Ambiguous Names").
He died in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Qa‘dah, 489 AH (1096 CE).

List of Works
This specialized hadith monograph examines the critical transmission defects and variant routes of the pattern-chained narration concerning permission to leave or stay for the Eid sermon. It focuses on the critical evaluation of the hadith transmitted through a chain where successive narrators convey the tradition specifically between the prayer and sermon on Eid day, addressing the declaration that allows attendees to remain for the sermon or depart after completing the prayer.
