Abu al-Hasan al-Jurjani (d. 392 AH / 1002 CE) was a Shafi'i jurist, poet, literary critic, and chief judge of Rayy, celebrated for his landmark critical study al-Wisata bayna al-Mutanabbi wa Khusumihi ("The Mediation Between al-Mutanabbi and His Adversaries") .
Early life and education
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Isma'il al-Jurjani was born in Jurjan . In 337 AH, as he approached puberty, he traveled with his brother Abu Bakr—who was already an accomplished debating jurist—to Nishapur, where the two brothers studied and heard a large corpus of hadith together . Al-Jurjani traveled widely during his youth, studying under prominent scholars of his era across various regions, including Iraq, Syria, and the Hejaz . He adhered to the Shafi'i school of law and was also listed by biographical sources among the Mu'tazilites for combining speculative theology (kalam) with Shafi'i jurisprudence .
Judicial career
Al-Jurjani initially served as the judge of Jurjan before being appointed chief judge (qadi al-qudat) of the Buyid realm by the ruler Fakhr al-Dawla one year after the death of the vizier al-Sahib ibn Abbad . Stationed in Rayy, he administered the judiciary with widespread acclaim; Abu Sa'd al-Abi praised him for his incorruptibility, moral integrity, justice, and decisiveness in office . According to al-Tha'alibi, he retained the supreme judgeship of Rayy continuously until his death .
Literary standing and scholarship
Al-Jurjani achieved high distinction in literature, poetry, and Arabic calligraphy, with biographers noting that his script rivaled that of the master calligrapher Ibn Muqla . Al-Tha'alibi eulogized him as combining the calligraphy of Ibn Muqla, the prose style of al-Jahiz, and the poetic elegance of al-Buhturi . His poetry often reflected personal dignity and professional aloofness from sycophancy, particularly his famous verses opening with:
They say to me: "You have a certain reserve," but they only saw a man who recoiled from places of humiliation.
In literary criticism, his major treatise al-Wisata bayna al-Mutanabbi wa Khusumihi established an impartial framework for evaluating the controversial poetic corpus of al-Mutanabbi, balancing the poet's virtues against his flaws and countering the harsher criticisms leveled by al-Sahib ibn Abbad . He also authored a large Qur'anic commentary titled Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Majid and a historical work titled Tahdhib al-Tarikh .
Death
Al-Jurjani died in Rayy on Tuesday, with six nights remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah 392 AH (a report specifies 23 Dhu al-Hijjah; another variant gives 396 AH, while the date 366 AH was noted by biographers as an erroneous conflation with another scholar), at an age under seventy . The prominent judge al-Qadi Abd al-Jabbar led his funeral prayer in Rayy, after which his casket was transported to Jurjan for burial .
