Scholarly Standing and Reception

Al-Jawhari specialized in the hadith transmissions of Malik ibn Anas . He also compiled a separate collection dedicated to Malik's narrations outside al-Muwatta .

Scholars praised his piety and mastery of legal traditions. The judge Muhammad ibn al-Hadhdha' described him as a virtuous, pious, and reserved jurist among the foremost legal scholars of his era . Abu 'Umar al-Talamanki noted his solitary demeanor, recording that he confined himself to his home and rarely ventured out . Abu al-Walid al-Baji stated that there was no harm in his transmissions, and al-Dhahabi characterized him as an accomplished imam and hadith master (hafiz) .

Death

Al-Jawhari died in Ramadan 381 AH (November–December 991 CE) in Egypt, according to the hadith scholars al-Habbal and Abu al-Qasim ibn Manda . Al-Dhahabi surmised that he died in middle age . An alternative estimate reported from Ibn al-Hadhdha' places his death earlier, around 335 AH .
