al-Isam al-Asfarayini (873–945 AH / 1468–1538 CE) was a Hanafi scholar, grammarian, and rhetorician from Khurasan, best known for his extensive rhetorical commentary al-Atwal.
Life and family
His full name was Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Arabshah al-Isfarayini, with the honorific title 'Isam al-Din. His lineage is traced back to the classical theologian Abu Ishaq al-Isfarayini. He was born in 873 AH (1468 CE) in Isfarayin, a locality in Khurasan, into a scholarly household where both his father and his grandfather had held the post of judge under the Timurid dynasty. Raised in this environment, he completed his education, achieved widespread scholarly renown, and authored his compositions in Isfarayin. In his later years, he traveled to Samarkand, where he died.
Biographical sources report his death in 945 AH (1538 CE), with variant accounts recording it in 943 AH, 944 AH, or around 951 AH at approximately seventy-two years of age. He had several sons, including Ali, Jamal al-Din, and Sadr al-Din; Sadr al-Din subsequently settled in Mecca, where the family established an enduring scholarly reputation.
Scholarly contribution and reception
In legal jurisprudence, he adhered to the Hanafi school, while maintaining an orthodox Sunni theological position that actively countered Mu'tazili interpretations within literary and rhetorical texts. His scholarship spanned rhetoric, Arabic grammar, logic, and Quranic exegesis.
In rhetoric, he composed al-Atwal (The Longer [Commentary]), an expansive interwoven commentary on Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini's Talkhis al-Miftah. In exegesis, he authored a detailed supercommentary (hashiyah) on al-Baydawi's Anwar al-Tanzil wa-Asrar al-Ta'wil, covering the text from its beginning through Surah al-A'raf as well as from Surah al-Naba' to the end of the Quran, which was dedicated to the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. He also authored Mizan al-Adab (The Balance of Literature) on Arabic language and philology.

List of Works
al-Atwal Sharh Talkhis Miftah al-Ulum (The Longer [Commentary]: Commentary on the Summary of the Key of Sciences) is an extensive Arabic commentary on rhetoric. It comments on Talkhis al-Miftah (Summary of the Key), Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini's rhetorical handbook that condenses the third section of al-Sakkaki's Miftah al-Ulum. Written as an interwoven commentary, the work merges the base text into detailed explanations, partly to critically evaluate and counter analyses and arguments presented in Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani's commentary, al-Mutawwal.
