Abu al-Hasan al-Hufi (d. 430 AH / 1039 CE) was an Egyptian grammarian, Quranic reciter, and exegete best known for his extensive grammatical and interpretive study of the Quran, al-Burhan fi Tafsir al-Quran (The Proof in Quranic Exegesis) .

Origins and Education

His full name was Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'id ibn Yusuf . His nisba, al-Hufi, traces back to the rural district of al-Hawf in the province of al-Sharqiyya in Egypt, whose chief town was Bilbays; he came specifically from the village of Shubra al-Lanjah . While al-Sam'ani initially assumed al-Hawf to be a single village in Egypt or a locality in Oman, later biographers clarified that the designation referred to the entirety of the rural Sharqiyya region .

Al-Hufi moved to Cairo to pursue his advanced studies, where he read under Abu Bakr al-Udfuwi, the prominent student of Abu Ja'far al-Nahhas . He also studied with scholars arriving from the Islamic West (the Maghrib), narrated from Ibn Rashiq, and held a substantial collection of the writings of al-Nahhas .

Teaching and Scholarship

Al-Hufi established teaching circles in Egypt dedicated to Arabic philology and grammar, training numerous Egyptian scholars . The biographer Ibn Khallikan noted having examined multiple literary manuscripts containing al-Hufi's handwritten reading certificates granting authorization to students who studied them under his guidance . His transmissions and compositions were disseminated across the Islamic West; students who received licenses (ijazat) or narrated his works included Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Isma'il ibn Khazraj al-Lakhmi—who received a written authorization in Rabi' al-Thani 421 AH—as well as Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Da'im ibn Marzuq al-Qayrawani and the judge of Malaga, Abu Ali Husayn ibn Isa al-Kalbi .

Al-Hufi's scholarly reputation rested largely on his integration of Arabic grammar with Quranic interpretation. His major exegetical work, al-Burhan fi Tafsir al-Quran (also referenced as al-Burhan fi Ulum al-Quran), systematically addressed verse syntax, recitation variants, and legal meanings across thirty volumes, recorded in some Andalusian bibliographies as spanning one hundred large volumes . He also composed a dedicated ten-volume treatise on Quranic parsing entitled I'rab al-Quran (The Grammatical Analysis of the Quran), in addition to an authoritative manual on grammar, al-Mawdih fi al-Nahw (The Clarifier in Grammar) .

Death

Al-Hufi died on the morning of Saturday, 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 430 AH (1039 CE) .
