Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Barti (c. 190s–280 AH / c. 810s–893 CE) was an Iraqi hadith scholar, Hanafi jurist, and judge in Baghdad and Wasit, best known for compiling a hadith collection organized by Companion narrators, al-Musnad .
Lineage and Early Life
His full name was Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa ibn al-Azhar al-Barti . His nisba derives from Birt, a settlement in the agrarian environs (Sawad) of Baghdad near al-Mazrafah . He was born in the decade after 190 AH .
Education and Scholarship
Al-Barti adhered to the legal school of the scholars of Iraq (the Hanafi madhhab) . He studied jurisprudence under Abu Sulayman Musa al-Juzajani, a student of Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, transmitting al-Shaybani's legal works through him . He was also an associate and student of the judge Yahya ibn Aktham .
In hadith, he studied under numerous authorities from Baghdad, Basra, and Kufa, including Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl ibn Dukayn, Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, Muslim ibn Ibrahim, Abu Umar al-Hawdi, Abu Salamah al-Tabudhaki, Musaddad ibn Musarhad, Abd Allah ibn Maslamah al-Qa'nabi, and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah .
Among those who transmitted from him were his son Abu Khubayb al-Abbas ibn Ahmad, Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id, al-Qadi al-Mahamili, Ismail al-Saffar, Abu Sahl ibn Ziyad, and Ahmad ibn Salman al-Najjad . His hadith transmissions included dedicated Companion compendia within his Musnad, such as Musnad Abi Hurayrah .
Judicial Career and Later Life
Al-Barti held judicial office in Wasit and portions of the Sawad before being appointed judge over Baghdad following the death of Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i in 249 AH . During the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tamid, he served as judge over al-Sharqiyya (al-Karkh) and later the eastern side of Baghdad, sharing judicial duties with the Maliki chief judge Ismail ibn Ishaq .
When the regent al-Muwaffaq sought to seize the funds of orphans and endowments held by the judges, al-Barti requested a three-day delay, during which he distributed the money to eligible beneficiaries and reliable trustees . Upon being summoned for the assets, he responded that he had delivered them to their rightful owners; he was subsequently removed from office . Another account states that he requested to be relieved of his duties during the reign of al-Mu'tadid . Following his retirement from public office, he secluded himself in his home in Birt and devoted his remaining years to worship and asceticism .
Standing and Death
Al-Barti was widely recognized for integrity and piety. Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal described him as truthful (sadūq), adding that he knew only good of him, and al-Daraqutni declared him trustworthy (thiqah) . Al-Ala' ibn Sa'id related a dream in which the Prophet ﷺ greeted al-Barti, kissed him between the eyes, and praised him for following his sunnah .
Al-Barti died in the western district of Baghdad on Saturday night, 19 Dhu al-Hijjah 280 AH (March 894 CE) .
