Abu Abd Allah al-Baquri (d. 707 AH / 1307 CE) was an Andalusian Maliki jurist, legal theorist, and hadith scholar, best known for his legal maxims treatise Tartib al-Furuq wa-Ikhtisaruha (The Arrangement and Abridgment of Legal Distinctions).
Life and Travels
His full name was Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Baquri al-Laythi. His nisba derives from Baqqurah (or Baqur), a town in al-Andalus, though some biographical transmissions record the variant spelling al-Yaquri. Al-Baquri lived at the court of the Marinid Sultanate in Fes. The Marinid ruler Abu Ya'qub Yusuf dispatched him on an official mission to the east, entrusting him with a large copy of the Quran written in Maghribi script to establish as an endowment (waqf) in Mecca or Medina.
During his journey to perform the pilgrimage, al-Baquri traveled through Egypt, where he studied under scholars including the Maliki jurist Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi. He also studied under the Andalusian judge al-Qadi al-Sharif Abu Abd Allah Muhammad al-Andalusi.
Scholarly Contribution
Al-Baquri engaged extensively with Maliki jurisprudence, legal theory (usul al-fiqh), and hadith transmission. He is recognized primarily for his restructuring of al-Qarafi's Anwar al-Buruq fi Anwa' al-Furuq in his abridgment Tartib al-Furuq wa-Ikhtisaruha. In this work, he condensed al-Qarafi's 548 principles down to 221 maxims, opening with thirteen universal maxims drawn from Izz al-Din ibn Abd al-Salam's Qawa'id al-Ahkam and arranging the rest into grammatical, usuli, and substantive fiqh classifications following standard legal headings to facilitate thematic study. He also produced Ikmal al-Ikmal, a hadith work supplementing Qadi Iyad's commentary on Sahih Muslim, and composed glosses on al-Qarafi's treatises in legal theory.
Death
After completing his pilgrimage and returning to the Maghrib, al-Baquri settled in Marrakesh, where he died in 707 AH (1307 CE). His grave in Marrakesh became a known site of visitation.
