Abu Bishr al-Yaman ibn Abi al-Yaman al-Bandaniji (200–284 AH / 815–897 CE) was an Iraqi lexicographer, philologist, and poet known for composing Kitab al-Taqfiya, an early Arabic vocabulary work arranged according to word endings .
Life and Education
Al-Bandaniji was born blind in the town of Bandanijayn, located near Baghdad, into a family of non-Arab landowning descent (dahāqīn) . He grew up in Bandanijayn, where his father left him extensive rural estates and orchards; he later sold these properties and spent his entire wealth financing his pursuit of learning and supporting scholars .
In his hometown, he studied poetry, literature, and philological transmissions under Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Mughira al-Athram, memorizing an extensive corpus from the books of Abu 'Ubayda Ma'mar ibn al-Muthanna and al-Asma'i . He possessed a prodigious memory, reportedly memorizing 150 verses of poetry along with their rare vocabulary in a single session .
Al-Bandaniji later traveled to Baghdad, Samarra, and Basra to study under the leading authorities of the grammatical schools of both Kufa and Basra . His teachers included Ibn al-A'rabi, Abu Nasr (the nephew and student of al-Asma'i), Ya'qub Ibn al-Sikkit, al-Riyashi, and al-Ziyadi; in Basra, he recited numerous works from memory before al-Riyashi and al-Ziyadi .
Scholarly Standing and Literary Activity
Al-Bandaniji was recognized as a versatile philologist who synthesized the traditions of both the Basran and Kufan grammatical schools . He authored Kitab al-Taqfiya through oral dictation, organizing lexical items according to their final letters and rhyming terminations (qawāfī) across the twenty-eight Arabic letters to serve as a practical reference for poets, literati, and scholars interpreting the Qur'an and poetry . In addition to lexicography, he composed treatises on metrics and literary commentary, including Kitab al-'Arud and Kitab Ma'ani al-Shi'r .
He was also an active poet in his own right, composing verses in the rajaz meter in which he praised his own eloquence, wisdom, and mastery of poetry despite his blindness .
