Lineage and Education
His full lineage is given as Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Nur al-Din Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Azizi al-Bulaqi al-Shafi'i, and he was also referred to by the honorific Nur al-Din. The nisba al-Azizi links him to the village of al-Aziziyya in the al-Sharqiyya province of Egypt. A variant genealogy cited from al-Jabarti records his name as Ali ibn Ali ibn Ali ibn Ali ibn Mutawi' al-Azizi al-Shafi'i al-Azhari.
Al-Azizi shared many of his teachers with al-Nur al-Shabramallisi, from whom he also studied and benefited directly. He regularly attended al-Shabramallisi's lessons covering foundational principles, legal branches, and the Arabic linguistic disciplines.

Biographers, including al-Muhibbi, described al-Azizi as an accomplished jurist and hadith master endowed with quick memorization, exceptional retention, humility, and dedication to study, noting his particular affection for scholars of hadith. His scholarly output was characterized by extensive compilation and transmission of material alongside his own commentary. In addition to his celebrated hadith commentary al-Siraj al-Munir, he authored a supercommentary on Sharh al-Tahrir by Zakariyya al-Ansari and glosses on Shafi'i legal texts.
